Mission Statement

The National Great Books Academic Community is an entirely voluntary association unconnected to any commercial enterprise either for profit or not for profit. It came into existence as a labor of love forged out of practical as well as philosophical concerns about how to best help under prepared and minority student populations obtain a meaningful, sustaining liberal education while in the process strengthening such skills as critical thinking. A central goal is to provide an opportunity for those already engaged in teaching Great Books or who are curious about doing so. It aims to do this in a few ways. One is to suggest some ways to go about setting up a Great Books Curriculum and teaching a Great Books core curriculum course along with concrete tools for doing the job. Another is to provide you with a community with identifiable individual members who you can contact to discuss questions and to pursue any interest you may have in bringing the benefits of it to your own classroom or, as we would enthusiastically wish, to your campus.
